ENGLISH SCHOOL (Mid 19th century), Gentleman, head and shoulders portrait, wearing a high collar jacket, pinned with a garter star, oil on canvas, unsigned, 43cm x 34cm, we believe the portrait to be of The Hon. John Denis Browne, 1st Marquess of Sligo (1756-1809), the son of The Earl of Altamont of Westport House, Co Mayo. He was a member of the Irish Parliament and later supported the Act of Union. In August 1800 he was made a member of the Knights of St. Patrick and created 1st Marquess of Sligo in the December. He was painted around that time by John Opie R.A and engraved by William Whiston Barney.
