A MANSFIELD-TORKSEY PORCELAIN NAMED JUG, painted in the manner of William Billingsley, painted with opposing landscapes beneath a gilt leaf and berry border to the rim and gilt lines, lettered 'Thomas Lewis Born May 5th 1809'.
From a Private Collection

For examples of similar work by Billingsley refer to 'A History of the Torksey and Mansfield China Factories' by C. L. Exley and 'Not just A Bed of Roses' by the Usher Gallery Lincoln.

Thomas Lewis was the son of Captain Lewis upon whose ship Mr William Billingsley and his daughters were sailing when a fierce storm hit them. The personal message 'Remember' inscribed in gilt to the underside of the jug is thought to be in thanks to the captain for bringing them to safety through the storm between Bristol and Cardiff in 1807.
